SNEAKERS NEWS : Sneakers 4 Success makes students smile. Gym shoes are to physical
education as pencils and keyboards are to English class. That's the conclusion
a group of Muscatine residents came to before beginning the Sneakers 4 Success
program in the summer of 2009. The program operates out of the Muscatine Center
for Non-Profits at 129 W. Second St. and is a project of Women in Networking,
an organization that facilitates friendships and business relationships. "I'm
glad they're located here," said Dona Pearce, administrative assistant
for the Muscatine Center for Non-Profits. "They work hard and help a lot
of children." Shannon Lewis, of Muscatine, a Sneakers 4 Success board member,
said her group provides Muscatine Community School District students with quality,
well-fitting shoes. The group, which bought 1,300 pairs of shoes for students
in 2010, accepts donations to buy shoes from Muscatine's Shoe Sensation and
Walmart at a discount.
